I learned on my own body first.
I am Joseph Wheat, a 40-year-old ISSA-certified personal trainer in Oshkosh, WI.
Where it started.
I got into training by teaching myself how to solve problems I was having with my own body. Studying with another organization first got me motivated to become a certified personal trainer. After studying with ISSA I really got into it, and that is what made me knowledgeable about what is going on in my own body. I have seen the effects firsthand, and now I am confident I can do the same for others.
Practice, like music.
I play piano and I am learning two other instruments. Music has been, and still is, my first art form, and it shapes how I coach. You do not hand a student a concerto on day one. You teach the scale, explain why the fingering matters, and build from there. Training works the same way: each exercise is shown, explained, and practiced until you own it.
"I tell the client my approach and the reasoning behind them for each exercise. I refuse to allow the client to not know the reasons for their efforts, lest they become discouraged/weary about achieving their goals."
